CLASS 1
Homework
– ISO. Experiment with your ISO settings. Shoot the same image using different ISOs, going from low to high. Bring the lowest and highest versions to class.
– Rule of Thirds. Take pictures using rule of thirds.
– Work the Scene. Find a scene or subject and shoot it several different ways.
– Framing. Find a subject and use other elements in the scene to frame it.
Bring 10-12 pictures to class.
CLASS 2

– Experiment with depth of field, shooting both shallow and long depth of field.
– Find a moving subject and shoot it at different shutter speeds. Try rushing water, ceiling fan, traffic or anything else you can think.
– Create some images emphasizing lines — leading lines, lines as patterns or textures, etc.
– Try to use rule of thirds and framing in your compositions.
– Bring up to 10 images to class.

– Edit a picture: adjust brightness/contrast and/or color adjustments, crop, remove blemishes, etc. Bring in the before and after.
– Edit a new or existing image several different ways. Try to find multiple compositions within a single image by cropping it in different ways. Try a long panel shot, vertical (or horizontal, square, crop in a detail, etc. Don’t worry about losing resolution.
– Take some pictures that tell a story. it could be people or animals doing things, an abandoned car, dried flower, a pile of leaves at the base of an empty tree, etc.
– Look for faces in animate objects.
Bring 10-12 images to class.
CLASS 4

1. Shoot the light. Shoot some a) “contrasty” images – silhouettes, light against dark, picket fences, etc., b) colors in geometric shapes – square red barn, yellow triangle, etc., c) images with hard light, d) images with soft light and e) directional light, ie shoot something with sidelighting, front lighting and back lighting e) pick a color (blue, red, yellow, etc.) and shoot a series of images with that color as the subject .
2. Exposure Compensation: Using exposure compensation, shoot an image properly exposed, then over exposed and then under exposed.
3. Experiment with flash. Try some shots using Flash Exposure Compensation and some without it. Use fill flash outdoors. To activate the flash in a well lit situation, just manually pop it up.
4. In composing your homework images, consider everything we’ve discussed – rule of thirds, framing, lines, etc.
Bring 10-12 images to class.
CLASS 5
Homework
1 – Landscapes. Remember to try using lines, shapes, colors, contrast, as well as rule of thirds, etc., to organize or design your image. Look for signs of gestures, expressiveness, etc. Use the LCD screen to check your composition.
2 – Nature. Remember, no hand of man.
3 – Experiment with flash. Try some shots using Flash Exposure Compensation and some without it. Use fill flash outdoors. To activate the flash in a well lit situation, just manually pop it up.
4 – Review your camera controls. We have covered:
– Camera modes and how to shoot in Aperture Priority Mode
– How aperture, shutter speed and ISO affect exposure
– What ISO does and how to change it
– How to control depth of field and use it compositionally
– How to change your shutter speed and use shutter speed to stop action or blur movement
– Shutter’s rapid fire Servo Mode
– Exposure compensation
– Flash exposure compensation
– Fill flash
– What White Balance does and how to change it
5 – In addition to (not instead of ) landscape and nature shots, bring some people and/or pet pictures.
